East Sussex gives counterfeiters the boot

People attending two car boot sale events in Polegate and Hastings will get further protection from counterfeiters thanks to an agreement between East Sussex County Council and the car boot sale organisers.

6 April 2010

East Sussex County Council Trading Standards has joined forces with the Cophall Farm Car Boot Sale at Polegate and the Churchwood Social Club - which organises a car boot sale in Hastings - to say a big "no" to sellers and buyers of dodgy counterfeit goods.

The car boot organisers have signed the Real Deal national markets' charter to support the work of Trading Standards and the police in the fight against counterfeit goods at car boot sales in East Sussex.

Councillor Bob Tidy, Lead Member for Community Services at the County Council, said: "Car Boot Sales are a great way for people to buy and sell their goods, recycling what is no longer needed and hopefully making some money or bagging a bargain in the process.

"Unfortunately these events are sometimes targeted by criminals out to make money selling poor quality fake or stolen goods - so I'm delighted that the car boot organisers have signed this charter. I would urge the organisers of similar events in East Sussex to sign up and help us give the counterfeiters the boot."

As part of their commitment to the initiative, the car boot organisers will display three A-Boards delivering a strong anti-counterfeiting message and will be asking people to report fakes to Trading Standards.

To help the campaign, East SussexTrading Standards has created a new email hotline for reporting sellers of counterfeit goods: stopfakes@eastsussex.gov.uk.

Real Deal: Notes for editors

The Real Deal national charter is designed to keep traders in counterfeit goods out of UK markets. It was launched at the Trading Standards Institute Annual Conference in Brighton on 30 June 2009. Initiated by the Industry Trust for Intellectual Property Awareness, the Real Deal campaign is supported by the UK-IPO; the Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services (LACORS); the Local Government Association (LGA); the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA); the Trading Standards Institute (TSI); the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA); the Retail Markets Alliance (RMA); the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) and the Alliance Against IP Theft. In effect, all the key organisations, with an interest in this issue in England and Wales, have joined forces under the Real Deal campaign banner to tackle the problem.
